Championship Midpoint: Plews Riders Deliver Consistent Results in Budapest

Round four of the 2026 Super Enduro World Championship took place in Budapest, Hungary on the weekend of Jan 31st. This race marks the halfway point of the championship and at this point we will start to see the riders settling into the championship standings. This race was hosted in a massive arena packed with 14 000 spectators so the atmosphere was absolutely fantastic.

In 2025 this was a huge track with some very large jumps that proved very entertaining for fans with every class having crashes and tumbles on the track. Looking at the track this year there are some noteworthy sections such as a big rock section where riders were expected to get stuck. Immediately after this there is a second smaller rock section that is not as technical but where riders were sure to come together a bit. There was a good chance that the race will be won or lost in these rock sections. One of the biggest jumps to date in super enduro was on this track as well as the matrix which is also another important section of the track where getting a good rhythm was necessary to get through.

European cup classification

The European cup classification makes a return for their third round of the championship. We have Alessandro Azzalini #27 racing on a KTM is our Plews Supported rider starting on the first row for race 1 in 4th position. A reminder that this race is 5 minutes + 1 lap. The goal of the start is to avoid any bottlenecks heading into the track and fortunately Azzalini has a great start coming top 3 round the first corner. He rides clean through the first section but gets caught up on the big rock section. Luckily he makes a good recovery and settles into 5th after lap 1. Azzalini then moves up to 5th ahead of Broniewski and after a fight with Kargul and a tussle on the track Azzalini comes out ahead in 3rd. Heading to the finish he gets caught up behind riders in the matrix but manages to across the line to finish in 3rd with 15 points.

Race 2 is not a reverse grid start for the Euro cup classification so we had Azzalini on the front row in 4th. A close call on the start for Azzalini who almost goes down after bumping bars with Szöke. It’s absolute chaos over the first big jump where Azzalini lands on the tyre on the end of the jump and finds himself upside down and off the track. He is able to recover but unfortunately ends up at the back in 14th position. He starts to put pressure on the riders ahead and moves up to 12th. He encounters a bit of traffic through the matrix section but gets back on the pace and finishes the race in 12th position with 4 points.

Azzalini finishes round 3 in 6th position with 19 points. Looking at the overall championship points he is sitting in 4th with a total of 69 points. A great place to be with consistent racing.

Youth classification

Connor Watson #38 who our Plews supported rider, sits on the first row in 4th for the start of race 1. Racing starts with a roar from the riders but not for Connor with a bad start after stalling the bike and ending up in last position. He certainly had some work to do to catch up and make it back to the front but puts in the work and ends up in 5th position after lap 1. While heading over the big double Connor goes over the bars in a big crash. He would lose a lot of time from this and falls down in the standings. With just over 1 minute of racing to go and so many riders down it’s decided by FIM to stop the race with a Red Flag. Connor unfortunately finds himself setting in 13th position which will be a disappointing outcome for this race.

Race 2 is not a reverse grid start for the youth class so we have Connor sitting on the front row in 4th position. Once again a bad start for Connor who is last down the straight and left needing to catch up. With a number of riders crashing out Connor has a perfect opportunity to overtake into 3rd but unfortunately gets caught up in the rock section and loses some time casing the finish jump. It is clear that this race is one of the most challenging of the season so far for the youth class. Walczak drops the bike allowing Connor to pass for 2nd. It is tight competition between the two and Connor really has to fight to keep the pace. He is riding well and for a moment takes the lead from Merasicky but loses it over the logs. With two laps to go riders are getting tired and Connor drops the bike over the logs losing time behind 1st. Connor takes a fantastic line over the big rock section and with a last push to the finish crosses the line in 1st without even realizing! He claims a full 20 points.

Connor finishes round 4 once again on the podium in 2nd position with 26 points. Looking at the overall championship points he is sitting in 2nd with a total of 123 points.

Junior classification

Toby Shaw is our Plews supported rider starting on the first row in 2nd position for race 1. This is a 6min +1 lap race. Toby has a relatively good start but tucks the front wheel into the first corner and goes down ahead of most of the riders which will result in him falling back to 8th after lap 1. Shaw does a great job to get through the big rock section and works up to 5th position. Popovici and Piazza get caught up in the smaller rock section which perfectly opens the door for Shaw to overtake into 3rd position. Toby spends the rest of the race working to make as little mistakes as possible and finishes in 3rd with 15 points. A really great comeback after a troublesome start.

Race 2 brings a reverse start order which finds Toby on the second row in 13th position. A really tough spot to be in so he will be looking to have a good start and try to get ahead in the rock garden. Unfortunately that doesn’t quite happen and he finds himself closer to the back of the pack. Shaw consistently makes his way through the track and up the order to find himself in 7th after the first lap. He also finds some really great lines through the rock sections to overtake into 6th. Schmuser goes down in the big rock section which is a great opportunity for a good pass to move all the way to 3rd. Shaw looks to put pressure on Crayston to pass in the rock section and moves up to 2nd. With each lap Shaw works his way to catch up to Gomez in 1st. Very exciting racing and a clear push from Shaw who almost makes a pass but will have to settle for 2nd across the line with 17 points.

The third and final race starts with Shaw on the front row in 2nd position. He really bashes bars with Schmuser on the start straight but is able to keep going and riding smoothly through the rock sections. Shaw finds himself in 2nd with a big lead ahead from 3rd. He is absolutely keeping the pressure on 1st and racing well working through the track. He unfortunately gets caught up on the matrix section while lapping riders. Once again Shaw goes down in the Matrix allowing Gomez to overtake leaving Shaw in 3rd position however a couple laps later the opposite happens where Gomez goes down and Shaw is able to move back up into 2nd. A big crash from one of the other riders forces the red flag and the race to stop. Shaw finds himself in 3rd with 15 points.

Shaw finishes round 4 on the podium in 3rd position with 47 points. Looking at the overall championship points he is sitting in 2nd with 179 points.

Prestige classification

Diogo Vieira #21 is one of our Plews supported riders in this classification and starts on the second row in 8th. We are also excited to have Marc Fernandez #56 back on track sitting on the second row for race 1 . Not a great start for Marc, but by going around the outside in the first corner, Diogo and Marc manage to overtake a couple riders. A big crash in the big rock section opens the door for Diogo to pass and have a tough battle with the front runners. Diogo unfortunately gets into a crash with Billy and goes down in the smaller rock section. Fernandez also has some a challenges and gets stuck in the big rock sections. With all the chaos we find Diogo in 8th and Marc in 9th with 3 minutes to go. Marc has a bit of an issue and moved back to 11th behind Gomez. Diogo riding very clean and consistent finishes the race in 9th with 7 points and Fernandez finishes in 11th with 5 points.

Heading into race 2 we have both Fernandez and Vieira on the front row in 5th and 6th respectively. Diogo has a fantastic start and finds himself in 1st and leading the pack. Fernandez struggles a bit through the initial sections and ends up in 12th after the first lap. It is certainly challenging to compete against Billy Bolt who quickly takes 1st but Diogo is able to keep up the pace and finds himself in 3rd behind Brightmore. A lot of pressure on Diogo from Jonny Walker who overtakes in the big rock section. An unfortunate line choice results in Diogo moving back to 6th. Fernandez riding consistently in 11th trying to get through the track with minimal mistakes. Diogo gets overtaken by Abbot on the final lap to finish in 7th with 9 points. Fernandez finishes in 10th with 6 points.

The final race of the evening we had Diogo in 8th and Marc in 9th both sitting on the second row. Diogo does not have a good start riding straight into the pillar on the first corner getting caught up and holding up Fernandez behind him. Both take the outside line through the big rock section and are able to overtake a couple riders. Fernandez finishes lap 1 in 9th and Diogo in 11th. Fernandez finds the flow and starts to race really consistently until a mistake drops him back to 11th. Diogo gets slightly caught up in the rock section but is able to maintain his position in 9th. Great consistent racing from both riders with Diogo finishing in 9th with 11 points and Fernandez in 11th with 5 points.

Diogo finishes round 4 in 9th position with 23rd points and Fernandez finishes in 11th position with 16 points. Looking at the overall championship points we have Diogo in 8th with 90 points and Fernandez in 13th with 37 points.
